The school invested in Carolina Science Building Blocks of Science curriculum, which is a great experimental and hands-on program. There were three themes (Energy Works, Planet and Animal Structures, Changing Earth) I had each unit for a quarter and the last quarter I did a mash up of all experiments. Students also kept a science journal where they recorded experiments using the scientific method as well as vocabulary and concepts.

 

Extensions included relevant nonfiction articles from ReadWorks to extend understanding of science concepts as well as incorporate nonfiction language arts standards. Brain Pop videos were helpful to introduce new vocabulary. Bill Nye and Steve Spangler videos help expand experiments. Videos were followed by a 3,2,1 response; 3 things you learned, 2 questions you have, and 1 connection to your life.
