Montessori
What is Montessori education? It is the child-focused approach that Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed for educating children that has been transforming schools around the globe. Montessori education is student-led and self-paced. Within a multi-age classroom children embrace multi-sensory learning and inquiry.

Lessons
Lessons within a Montessori school cover the standard subject matter as other schools; reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Dr. Montessori created hands on lessons and manipulatives that are widely used. Plus, Dr. Montessori also added other themes of learning; practical life (environment and self-care), discovery, fine motor, and gross motor. Though Dr. Montessori created lessons for these themes, many of them can be adapted and adjusted.
As a teacher at the Academy I planned thematic lessons for whole group circle time as well as practical life lessons. Our classroom bulletin board also matched the theme of the month and I acquired the help of the children in decorating it by doing a craft.

Celebrating Diversity
The Montessori school was very diverse with students from Africa, Netherlands, Turkey, and Puerto Rico as well as staff from Argentina, Shri Lanka, and Japan. With the help of parents and staff we did fun cultural activities.
